Freesia Native to southern Africa and little known before 1874, Freesia captivated America and Europe when introduced in 1878. These graceful flowers were found in the Botanic Garden of Padua by Max Leichtlin, who then cultivated and distributed the plants widely. The stems of each Freesia spray twist to display a delicate arch of flowers in beautiful colors. An intensely aromatic floral, the pink varieties are the most highly scented. Not known at the time of the original publication of Kate Greenaway's language of flowers in 1846, Freesia symbolic meaning has been imbued with a more modern significance-grace under pressure.
